This weekend is an important one in the world of Irish sports. This Sunday, September 9th, is the date of the All Ireland Hurling Final. If you’ve never seen the sport of Hurling, be sure to check it out! It is a very fast field sport played with a stick (that resembles a field hockey stick) and a ball (that is similar in size to a baseball). Each team has 15 men on the field at one time, including their goalie. You can score by hitting the ball into the net past the goalie, or by hitting it between the uprights and over the top bar of the net. (Kind of like an NFL field goal.
Most importantly, Galway is one of the two contenders. They will be facing off against Kilkenny. I will, of course, be rooting for my former city of residence. Kilkenny is the defending champ, although Galway has previously beaten them earlier in the season.
This Sunday morning, I’ll be in an Irish pub, enjoying an Irish Breakfast(if you dont know what that is, don’t worry…I will be sure to post about it later) and cheering on the maroon and white.
Who will you be rooting for this Sunday, and how will you be enjoying the game?
